Mariners Take a 3-0 Win Over Saint Joe's (ME) in Season Opener

GORHAM, Maine – Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied 11 kills, while Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) dished out 26 assists and Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) recorded 15 digs to lead the Mariners to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-23) victory over Saint Joseph's College (ME.) in season opener.
 
How it Happened: After starting with a four-point deficit, the Mariners fought their way back against the Monks, taking an evenly matched first set after Albritton served an ace to head to the second. The Mariners dominated the second set, getting off to a quick lead and never looking back. The third set was a tight match that was knotted at 23-23, before Hunnie Zuber-Stephens (Lubbock, Texas) and Melampy hit back-to-back kills to end the game.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Melampy recorded a game-high 11 kills, six digs, two assists, and one ace.
  • Albritton dished out a game-high 26 assists, nine digs, four kills, two aces, two blocks, and one block assist.
  • Rich tallied a game-high 15 digs, two aces, and one assist.
  • First-year, Ila Smith (Lexington, Ky.) had nine kills, hitting .500, along with two block assists and one dig in her collegiate debut.
  • Maine Maritime had a total of 35 kills on the night.
  • Maggie Sylvester tallied a team-high five kills and seven digs for the Monks.
  • Hanna Holden recorded 11 assists and 11 digs
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 1-0, while Saint Joseph's College (ME.) falls to 1-1. The Mariners return to action tomorrow,September 3 at 12:00pm against the University of New England and 4:00pm against University of Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine.
