Strong Second Half Leads Mariners to Victory

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's basketball defeats SUNY Canton 80-71 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
 
How it Happened: The Mariners took an early lead in the first five minutes of the game, before the Kangaroos knotted the game at 16 all. SUNY Canton's lead held throughout the half, taking a six point lead going into halftime.
 
The Kangaroos worked their lead up to nine points in the second half, before Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) hit a layup with ten minutes left in the game to take a one point lead. After the Mariners regained the lead, they never looked back, taking an 80-71 win.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Connor Tuerff (Hendersonville, Tenn.) tallied 20 points and five rebounds.
  • Reincke added 17 points, five rebounds, and one assist.
  • Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds, along with eight assists, three blocks, and one steal.
  • Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to three assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Terrence Fields recorded 22 points, while Quran DuBois added 15 points for the Kangaroos.
  • Maine Maritime shot 43.5% from the hardwood and 32.3% from the three point line, while SUNY Canton shot 35.7% from the floor and 35% from beyond the arc.
 
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in NAC play, while SUNY Canton falls to 4-13 on the year and 2-5 in conference play. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, January 14 at 3:00pm against NVU-Johnson in a conference matchup.
