Mariners Defeat Hornets

CASTINE, Maine – Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) hits five clutch free throws as Maine Maritime men's basketball defeats NVU-Lyndon 86-85 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened: The first half was extremely competitive with multiple lead changes and neither team leading by more than 10 points. Lyndon ended the half with an eight point lead after a buzzer beater shot.
 
Lyndon kept a strong hold on their lead for the first part of the second half, before the Mariners started cutting into the lead. After fighting from behind the entire half, the Mariners finally knotted the game at 83 with 1:12 left on the clock after Heinz nailed two free throws. Heinz went on to hit three more to secure a 86-85 victory for the Mariners.  
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) tallied a game-high 24 points, two rebounds, one block, one steal, and one assist.
  • Heinz had 19 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, one steal, and one assist.
  • Isaiah Oquendo (Orlando, Fla.) tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal off the bench.
  • Peyton Olsen recorded 25 points, while Mondwell Bukle tallied 22 for the Hornets.
  • Maine Maritime shot 42% from the hardwood and 47.8% from the three point line, while the Hornets shot 49.3% from the floor and 33.3% from three point land.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 8-12 overall and 4-7 in conference, while the Hornets fall to 6-14 on the year and 3-6 in conference action. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00pm when they host Bates College in a non-conference matchup.
