Barela Scores Career-High in Win Over Wildcats

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime opens up the weekend with a 79-60 conference win against SUNY Poly. Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) hit a game-high 23 points, along with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
 
How it Happened: The Mariners got off to a slow start, falling to a seven point deficit in the first four minutes of the game. After some back-and-forth action, they managed to cut that lead to four at the end of the first quarter. Maine Maritime came out much stronger in the second quarter, knotting the game at 21 with a three from Evelyn Dagan (Castine, Maine) and taking a six point lead going into the half.
 
Maine Maritime came out on fire in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 25-10 to take a 21 point lead. The Mariners continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, claiming a 79-60 win.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Barela had a game-high 23 points, along with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
  • Dagan added 16 points, two rebounds, and one assist.
  • Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocks.
  • Molly Burdick recorded 18 points, while Lauren Denny and Lyrik Jackson added 15 points each to the mix.
  • Maine Maritime shot 40% from the floor and 41.9% from beyond the arc, while the Wildcats shot 37.3% from the hardwood and 22.2% from three point land.
 
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while SUNY Poly falls to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in conference action. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, January 7 at 1pm when they host Cazenovia College for another conference matchup.
