Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mariners Capture Conference Crown

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy defeated Morrisville State 1-0 Saturday to capture the 2023 North Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Championship. The title marks the third for the Mariners soccer program, which is making a habit of winning in odd years. Maine Maritime captured the crown in both 2019 and 2021.

Kirra Magaña netted the game's only goal in the 21st minute, beating the Mustangs' Melanie Rott to the low left corner. Magaña scored the game's only goal in the NAC East finals over Lesley last Sunday. She also assisted the game-winner in the conference quarterfinals.

Abby Wong, Kirra Magaña, Taylor Webster, and Hazel Stoddard were named to the All-NAC Tournament team. Stoddard was named the Most Valuable Player.

Magaña's goal held up as a stingy Mariners defense limited Morrisville's offensive opportunities. Isa Thesing recorded two saves to earn the shutout, her eighth solo shutout of the season. Thesing's first save of the game didn't come until early in the 73rd minute, stopping a Laura Bedell shot headed toward the low-right corner. The rebound was loose in front of the Mariners' goal before a defender booted it out of harm's way. She came up with another crucial stop moments three minutes later. It was Morrisville's last shot of the night.

Maine Maritime outshot Morrisville 14-4 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rott recorded five saves for the Mustangs.

With the win, Maine Maritime moved to 15-4-1. The 2023 season marks the first time the Mariners have won 15 games in a single season. Morrisville fell to 6-8-3 with the loss.

The Mariners will wait for Monday's NCAA selection show to learn their playoff opponent and game location.
