STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team (6-3) defeated the St. Joseph's College Monks (6-4) 73-64 on the road in a non-conference match.
Maria Barela led the Mariners earning 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The Mariners had a strong start in the contest, outscoring the Monks 15-8 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Monks went on a late run scoring eight points to take a one point lead heading into halftime.
Following the half, the Mariners quickly regained their lead in the third quarter scoring the first two baskets with a layup from Barela and a three from
Evelyn Dagan. Dagan had an impressive third quarter that included nailing three three's in-a-row that put the Mariners up by 14 with just under four minutes to go in the third. The Mariners ultimately held their lead through the fourth quarter to secure the nine point win.
Along with her strong third quarter, Dagan finished the contest with 18 points, three rebounds and one steal. More strong performances for the Mariners included
Makenzie Monzon who led the Mariners with nine assists. Monzon also secured five points and five rebounds in the contest.
The Monks were led by Elisabeth Stapelfeld who scored 20 points along with six rebounds, one assist, and one block. Grace Ramsdell finished with a double-double for St. Joe's on 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mariners return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 3 on the road against Bates College with tip off set for 5:00 pm.
