Caron Nets Seven Goals in Victory Against Terriers

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat Thomas College, 18-8 in a North Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Rebecca Caron (Naples, Maine) tallied a game-high seven goals for the Mariners, establishing an impressive career-high, while scooping up four ground balls and causing four turnovers.
 
How it Happened: Maine Maritime absolutely dominated in the first quarter of play, scoring seven unanswered goals, sparked by Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.). The second quarter was much more competitive, with Thomas College netting four goals, while the Mariners recorded five to extend their lead to 12-4 going into halftime.
 
The second half had similar action to the second quarter, with each team going back-and-forth, but the Mariners were able to run away with an 18-8 victory against the Terriers in their first conference game of the year.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Caron tallied a game-high seven goals, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers.
  • Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) added five goals, two assists, eight ground balls, five draw controls, and five caused turnovers.
  • Magaña chipped in two goals, 10 draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
  • Four Mariners each had one goal.
  • Mary Larochelle and Alia Chasse each had two goals for the Terriers, while four others had one.
  • Kelsey Melton (Great Falls, Va.) had five saves in net for the Mariners, while Lizzy Gotay tallied eight saves for the Terriers.
  • The Mariners held a 30-18 advantage in shots and a 34-13 edge in ground balls over the Terriers.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference, while Thomas College falls to 0-6 on the year and 0-1 in conference action. The Mariners return to action on Wednesday, April 5 at 4:00pm when they travel to UMaine-Farmington for a conference matchup.
