Balanced Scoring Sends Mariners to Victory

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse beat UMaine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Monday evening.
 
How it Happened: After Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) found the back of the net in the first two minutes to put the Mariners on the board, the two teams went back-and-forth with the Mariners taking a 4-3 lead going into the second quarter. The game continued to be competitive in the second quarter with the Mariners holding on to their one-point lead going into the half with a score of 7-6.
 
The Mariners came out on fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Beavers 11-2 to take a commanding 18-8 lead as they enter the fourth quarter. Maine Maritime wrapped up the game with a 3-1 quarter to claim a 21-9 victory against the Beavers.
  
Inside the Numbers:
  • Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) led all scorers with six goals and one assist, while picking up four ground balls, causing two turnovers, and winning 13 draw controls.
  • Rebecca Caron (Naples, Maine) and Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.) both had four goals and two assists each.
  • Card added three goals and Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) chipped in two goals and two assists.
  • Kaya Backman tallied three goals, while Emma Brown and Ruby McMinis each had two goals for the Beavers.
  • Ella Bowes (Valley Lee, Md.) tallied 14 saves for the Mariners, while Kate Nowell recorded 12 saves for the Beavers.
  • Maine Maritime held a 40-29 advantage in shots and a 29-24 edge in ground balls over the Beavers.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 7-2 overall and a 2-0 in conference action, while the Beavers fall to 0-6 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, April 15 at 3:00pm when they host NVU-Lyndon in a NAC matchup.
