Mariners Sail Past Pilgrims

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat New England College in a non-conference matchup on Easter Sunday.
 
How it Happened: The Mariners got off to a quick start, scoring four straight goals, sparked by Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) who found the back of the net off a pass from Evan Golembeske (New Milford, Conn.). The Pilgrims ended the period with two goals of their to make the score 4-2 going into the second. New England College scored first before the Mariners dominated the rest of the half, scoring six consecutive goals to go into the half with a score of 10-3.
 
The Mariners continued to extend their lead with another six-point period, while the Pilgrims only put two goals past the Mariners to make the score 16-5 going into the fourth quarter. Maine Maritime wrapped up the game with a four-point quarter to claim a 20-5 victory over the Pilgrims.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Wilson led all scorers with six goals and three assists, while picking up two ground balls.
  • Alex Stevens (South Portland, Maine) recorded four goals and one assists, along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Jacob Hintermaier (Macon, Ga.) and Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) each added three goals and four others chipped in one goal each for the Mariners.
  • Oliver Bird (Brunswick, Maine) picked up a game-high nine ground balls and caused three turnovers.
  • Matt Daley scored two goals for the Pilgrims, while three others scored one goal each.
  • Garrett Ruszkowski (Sagas, Mass.) got the win for the Mariners, tallying seven saves, while Connor Almstrom recorded 13 for the Pilgrims.
  • Maine Maritime held a 64-27 advantage in shots and a 42-25 edge in ground balls over New England College.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 6-3 overall, while the Pilgrims fall to 0-10 on the year. The Mariners return to action on Friday, April 14 at 4:00pm when they travel to New York to face SUNY Poly in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
