CASTINE, Maine – Lone senior
Holly Reeder-Morning led the way for the Mariners and scored a new collegiate high 14 points in Maine Maritime Academy's women's basketball (8-4) 68-61 win over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Beavers (7-4).
Along with shooting 7-8 from the field for 14 points, Reeder-Morning had two assists, one rebound, and one block.
The Mariners had a strong start in the contest that included a 10 point run to put them up 13-4 early in the first quarter.
Evelyn Dagan scored five points in the run with a jumper followed by a made three. From there, the Mariners continued to hold a lead for the remainder of the first half of the contest.
Returning from halftime, the Beavers went on a fast eight point run to help regain a slight lead over the Mariners. After a hard fought third quarter the Mariners found themselves down by seven.
Grace Huntwork opened up the fourth quarter with a three to start the Mariners momentum. Back to back layups from Reeder-Morning with just under five minutes to go gave the Mariners back the lead. MIT answered with a pair of free throws to cut the Mariners lead down to one. The Mariners responded with first-year guard
Hailey Blanchard's layup followed by made free throws from
Erianna Moore and
Sydney Briscoe. This helped close out the win for the Mariners, their first of 2024.
The Mariners return to North Atlantic Conference play at home for their next contest on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 pm against Thomas College.
