Women's Soccer is Victorious on Senior Day over UMF

Sophia Hernandez scored the game's lone goal in the 72nd minute

CASTINE--Sophomore Sophia Hernandez came off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the second half, and classmate Isa Thesing made three saves, to help propel Maine Maritime Academy past UMaine-Farmington, 1-0, on Senior Day in North Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at Ritchie Field on Saturday. The host Mariners are now 5-4-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the NAC East Division, while the visiting Beavers are now 5-6-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the NAC-East.

  • Substitute Natalie Tracy led the Beavers with three shots.
  • Goalkeeper Paige Gonya made four stops to help keep UMF within striking distance.
How It Happened
  • The teams were scoreless at halftime, with the Mariners having a 5-3 edge in shots.
  • Maine Maritime broke through in the 72nd minute when Hernandez followed up on a rebound shot after a White free kick on goal. Hernandez was able to get behind the UMF defense and calmly headed home the ball over the keeper from 6 yards out. 
  • The Mariners kept the pressure on in the second half, outshooting the Beavers 9-3, but Thesing stopped Tracy on a partial breakaway to preserve a scoreless tie at the time.

  • .The Mariners trail the all-time series 19-12-2, but they have won the last five meetings against the Beavers.
  • Prior to the game, MMA's four-member senior class of Ja'Kia Aiken (Tecumseh [Mich] High School), Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Thornton Academy), Magana (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop High School) and White (New Sharon, Maine/Mt. Blue High School) were honored for their contributions on the field and in the classroom.
