Women's Soccer Proves Mettle in 1-1 Draw with Visiting Bowdoin

CASTINE--Senior Kirra Magaña scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to rally Maine Maritime Academy into a 1-1 tie with visiting Bowdoin College in women's soccer non-conference action at Ritchie Field on Tuesday night. The host Mariners are now 5-4-3 on the season, while the Polar Bears move to 2-5-5 overall.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Isa Thesing notched double-digit saves for the second time this season with 10.
  • Magana finished with four shots (three on goal) and sophomore Taylor Webster chipped in three.
Bowdoin Highlights
  • Kayley Huleatt scored BC's goal while Mary Rainey also made the scoresheet with an assist.
  • Jackie Shores led two teammates with five shots including a game-high five on goal.

How It Happened
  • The Polar Bears outshot the Mariners 22-11 but Thesing and her defensive line kept them off the scoreboard in the second half.
  • Huleatt opened the scoring on a feed from Rainey in the 35th minute.
  • The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half when a MMA player was taken down in the 18-yard box to set up Magana's tying goal.
  • Bowdoin pressed but Thesing stymied Shores on three consecutive shots--two on the diving variety--for her team.
  • MMA induced Bowdoin into 10 offside calls, including eight in the first half alone.
