Mariners Settle for a 2-2 NAC Men's Soccer Draw on Senior Day

Ronnie Morgan and Hunter Crea scored MMA's goals

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team concluded a five-game homestand on Saturday with a 2-2 tie against UMaine-Presque Isle on Senior Day at Ritchie Field. The Mariners now stand at 5-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference-East Division, while the visiting Owls are 2-10-1 on the season and 0-7-1 in the NAC-East.

MMA Highlights UMPI Highlights
  • Isaac Doore and Remar Shirley scored the Owls' goals, with the former recording five shots.
  • Samuel Paladino started the first half in goal with three saves and Tiernan Barbosa played the last 45 by making five stops.
How It Happened
  • Shirley converted a penalty kick goal in the 88th minute to level the score 2-all, after a MMA defender was called for a handball inside the 18-yard box.
  • Crea had restored the Mariners to a 2-1 in the 82nd minute on a nice passing combination from sophomores Dillon Wilkinson and Matthew Villeneuve.
  • Maine Maritime enjoyed statistical advantages of 23-15 shots, 10-4 shots on goal and 14-1 on corner kicks.
  • Doore tied the game 1-all from about 40 yards out by taking advantage of the sun in the goalkeeper's eyes and catching him off guard with the long strike.
  • Morgan staked MMA to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute after collecting a loose ball in the 6-yard box and poking the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Mariners had a good final look at the goal late in the game, but Fortuna-Ramos' shot was deflected away by the keeper.
Next Up
  • Maine Maritime travels to Bangor on Wednesday (5 p.m.) when it will play local rival Husson in a NAC contest.
