Mariners Say Good Night-Owls to UMaine-Presque Isle on Senior Night

Senior setter Katie Albritton leads Maine Maritime with a double-double

CASTINE--Showing no signs of rust after five days between matches, the Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a resounding 25-12, 25-19, 25-10 victory over visiting UMaine-Presque Isle at Smith Gymnasium on Friday. The Mariners improve to 11-9 overall and 7-0 in the North Atlantic Conference East Division, while the Owls drop to 8-13 on the season and 2-4 in the NAC East.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior setter Katie Albritton paved the way for her fellow classmates with a double-double of 20 assists and 12 digs--both match highs.
  • Senior Chloe Weeks (.500) and sophomore Sydney Williams (.667) clocked 10 kills apiece to lead all attackers. Weeks also had a pair of blocks.
  • Senior Grace Jennings served up a match-high five service aces, followed by Weeks with three and Albritton had two.
  • Senior Sydney Rich chipped in nine digs.
  • Senior Hunnie Zuber-Stephens, who suffered a season-ending injury during preseason, was listed in the starting lineup and team manager Sarah Bos also was honored as part of Senior Night in the prematch ceremony.
UMPI Highlights
  • Faith Graham and Rylie Kolkow led the offense with six kills and 13 assists, respectively.
  • Alexis Engel led the defense with eight digs.
How It Happened
  • Maine Maritime hit .269 as a team while holding UMPI to just .025.
  • The Mariners nearly doubled up the Owls in kills, 35-18, and produced 14 aces.
  • MMA got off to a quick start with a .304 attack percentage and suffocating defense that limited UMPI to minus-.080 hitting to take the first set by 13 points.
  • In the second set, UMPI took leads of 5-2 and 8-6 before the Mariners reeled off five unanswered points for an 11-8 lead. MMA used another 5-0 run to go up 16-9 and never looked back.
  • In the final set, MMA led wire to wire to seal the win. The Mariners started 7-2 and built a big lead at 18-7 to erase any doubt.
Up Next
  • Maine Maritime has a quick turnaround tomorrow with a non-conference tri-match at Southern Maine on Saturday, playing the host Huskies at 4 p.m. Before that encounter, MMA goes up against Keene State at 2 p.m.
