CASTINE--In Wednesday's regular-season home finale, the Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball team defeated local rival Husson University 25-7, 25-21, 25-13 at Smith Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 14-9 overall and 8-0 in the North Atlantic Conference East Division, marking the eighth year in a row in which Maine Maritime has gone unbeaten in conference play. The Eagles, meanwhile, fall to 6-15 on the season and 4-4 in the NAC East.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Sophomore Ally Hadley posted a double-double with a team-leading 10 kills (.625) and she had 12 assists.
- Senior setter Katie Albritton directed an efficient offense with a MMA-best 18 assists.
- The Mariners hit .333 and held the Eagles to .144, and the team also served up 14 aces led by senior Grace Jennings who had eight.
- Junior Ila Smith matched Hadley with 10 kills and a .625 attack percentage as both teammates had 16 swings against no hitting errors.
- Freshman Hannah Tate led the defense with 12 digs, followed by sophomore Sydney Williams (8 kills) and Albritton with eight apiece.
Husson Highlights
- Janna Preskorn led all attackers with 14 kills.
- Alyvia McIntyre recorded a match-high 24 assists.
- Beatrice Tursi had 16 digs to top all student-athletes.
First Set
- The Mariners got off to a strong start by outhitting the visitors .400 to .000.
- MMA jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 19-5, never trailing in the opening stanza.
Second Set
- Three MMA attack errors and three kills from Preskorn forged a 6-2 Husson lead.
- The Mariners, however, overcame their largest deficit in the match by going on a 7-2 run to go up 9-8.
- Husson tied it on the next play on another Preskorn kill before MMA reeled off four points in a row to increase the lead to 13-9.
- The Eagles clawed back to knot the score at 18-all only to see an attack error put the Mariners in the lead for good.
- Maine Maritime won seven of the final 10 points to take a two-sets-to-none cushion.
Third Set
- Maine Maritime clinched the win by ending the match on a 19-7 scoring run.
- Tied 6-6, MMA took advantage of a HU service error to go in the lead for good. That started a 4-0 scoring run as the Mariners led 10-6.
- After the Eagles climbed to within 10-8, the Mariners scored 14 of the next 18 points to get to match point at 24-12.
- MMA outhit Husson .458-.192 in the frame.
Beyond the Boxscore
- Maine Maritime has won 25 straight matches over Husson to extend its all-time series advantage to 40-9. The Mariners are 21-2 at home versus the Eagles.
- Albritton eclipsed the 2,500 assists plateau tonight and now has 2,509 for her career--ranking second in school history.
- The Mariners have won 62 consecutive conference matches dating back to 2015.
- Maine Maritime is the 2024 NAC East Division champion and will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament that begins Nov. 9-10.
