Mariners Settle for 2-2 Draw with Visiting Eagles in NAC Women's Soccer Contest

Kirra Magaña and Hadley Stoddard scored for Maine Maritime

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer team enjoyed a quick 2-0 lead but couldn't keep up that momentum in the second half before playing to a 2-2 draw with local North Atlantic Conference rival Husson University at Ritchie Field on Saturday. The host Mariners are now 4-4-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in the NAC East Division, while the Eagles are now 5-5-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the NAC-East.

MMA Highlights HU Highlights
  • Natalie Aviolla and Mackenzie Lambert scored the Eagles' goals.
  • Rylee Speed also had two points with a pair of assists.
How It Happened
  • Magana gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute when she faked an opponent moving to her left and rifled a shot from 20 yards away over the head of the keeper.
  • Maine Maritime went up 2-0 just 2 minutes and 25 seconds later as Stoddard took advantage of the keeper not punching away an MMA cross effectively, pouncing on the loose ball by knocking a left-footed shot into the back of the goal.
  • Aviolla cut the deficit in the 26th minute with her seventh goal of the season.
  • Lambert scored the tying tally in the 62nd minute.
  • Husson outshot MMA 16-4 (and 8-3 shots on goal), including a 10-1 margin in the second half.
  • The Mariners didn't give into that pressure to still earn a point in the conference standings on the afternoon.
