Men's Soccer Clamps Down on Visiting Husson, 2-0

The Mariners snap a six-game losing streak in the series

CASTINE--Less than 24 hours after losing in a shutout at North Atlantic Conference leader Thomas College, the Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team returned home and rebounded in a big way on Saturday by blanking local rival Husson University, 2-0, at Ritchie Field. The host Mariners improve to 4-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the NAC East Division, while the Eagles drop to 5-4-1 on the season and 2-3 in the NAC-East.

MMA Highlights
  • Sophomore James Baur scored both of the Mariners goals for his second multi-goal game this fall.
  • Classmate Reagan Moynihan recorded eight saves for this third shutout (he also has a combined ShO).
  • Gabriel Toledo, also a sophomore, had three shots on goal among five total to pace the squad.
HU Highlights
  • Mario Alvarez posted game highs of six shots and three on goal.
How It Happened
  • After a scoreless first half, Maine Maritime scored the only goal it would need in the 63rd minute when Baur took advantage of a misplay by the goalie outside his 18-yard box and shot the ball from over 30 yards out over the head of three HU defenders into the back of the net.
  • Baur added his second tally for insurance in the 87th minute, taking a through-ball and splitting two defenders on the way to dekeing the keeper to the left.
  • Maine Maritime had a 15-13 shots advantage, including a 5-3 margin in the first half.
  • Both teams played physically as they combined for 33 fouls and six yellow cards.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • The Mariners snap a six-game losing streak to the Eagles, who lead the all-time series, 49-20-6.
  • The shutout over Husson is MMA's first since 2019.
  • Baur already has two multi-goal games this season after scoring no goals as a freshman.
Next Up
  • Maine Maritime continues its five-game homestand next Saturday when NAC foe UMaine-Farmington comes to town for a noon start.
