Erianna Moore Named to All-Tournament Team as Mariners Fall at Host UMD

Maine Maritime lost to the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs, 77-63

DARTMOUTH, Mass.--Host UMass-Dartmouth used a strong second half to hold off the Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team to capture the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament with a 77-63 victory at the Tripp Athletic Center on Sunday. The UMD Corsairs are now 2-0 on the season while the Mariners fall even to 1-1.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Junior Evelyn Dagan led the Mariners in scoring with 19 points on 7-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Senior Erianna Moore (8 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals) represented MMA on the all-tournament team after recording 28 points, six assists and eight rebounds in two contests during the weekend.
  • Classmate Sydney Briscoe notched 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals this afternoon.
  • Sophomore Laney Lyle came off the bench to net a career-best 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
UMass-Dartmouth Highlights
  • Kaylin Zalewski (8-14 FG, 4-9 3FG) tallied a game-high 23 points. She also had game highs of eight rebounds and three steals.
  • Teja Andrews (9-15 FG) added 20 points and Carly Whiteside (5-8 FG, 8-11 FT) had 19. The latter also led the team with three assists.
How it Happened
  • UMass-Dartmouth held a slim 29-27 halftime lead, but outscored the Mariners 48-36 in the second half.
  • The Corsairs opened the second half with a 35-28 lead, but a pair of Dagan treys brought the Mariners to within one, 37-36, with 7 minutes and 3 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • UMass-Dartmouth, however, responded with a 13-2 run over a 3:56 span to increase its lead to 50-38 at the 3:07 mark.
  • After trailing 56-48 at the end of the third quarter, MMA fought back in the fourth to within 64-60 on a Moore jumper. Dagan keyed the comeback attempt with seven points during the stretch.
  • But the Corsairs ended the final 4:55 on a 13-3 scoring run to keep the Mariners at bay. Andrews and Whiteside scored six points each in the last five minutes.
  • The game featured four ties and six lead changes.
  • The Corsairs took advantage of 22 MMA turnovers to score 27 points and was able to outscore the opponent inside the paint, 36-14.
  • UMD outrebounded the Mariners 40-33 and outscored them on second-chance points, 11-4.
Inside the Boxscore
  • This was just the second meeting since 2011 between the teams, which have each won a game.
  • Dagan went over 500 career points (503).
Next Up
  • Maine Maritime will have its home opener at Smith Gymnasium next Friday (7 p.m.) against non-conference foe Otterbein University.
