Women's Basketball Holds Off Otterbein in Home Opener, 48-43

Senior Makenzie Monzon scored a game-high 12 points

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team made its 2024-25 home opener a successful one on Friday evening with a 48-43 victory over non-conference foe Otterbein University in a low-scoring affair at Smith Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 2-1 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 1-2.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior Makenzie Monzon led all scorers with 12 points and she had seven rebounds.
  • Classmate Erianna Moore had a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds and 11 points, plus she led all playmakers with three assists.
  • Senior Sydney Briscoe (7 points) pulled down 12 rebounds in 18 minutes.
  • Junior Jasmine Anderson was a spark off the bench, chipping in 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and a game-best five steals.
  • Freshman Addison Forry had seven offensive rebounds among eight total off the bench to give MMA an advantage on the glass.
Otterbein Highlights
  • Abby Rawlings led the team with 11 points and two assists, plus she had five rebounds.
  • Anna Waskiewicz (9 points) came off the bench to grab nine rebounds.
  • Kiara Hudgins (9 points) contributed four steals.
How it Happened
  • The Mariners built the largest lead of the night for either side at 44-33 on a Moore trey with 8 minutes and 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
  • Otterbein then went on a 9-0 run in a span of about 6 minutes to close 44-42 at the 2:20 mark.
  • But that would be the closest the Cardinals would get as MMA went 4-for-6 at the line and OU missed six field goals the rest of the way.
  • The Mariners outrebounded the Cardinals 52-35, including 19-13 on the offensive end to outscore them 11-4 on second-chance points.
  • The teams combined for 16 lead changes over the first 25 minutes.
  • Maine Maritime also had a scoring advantage inside the paint, 18-10.
  • Otterbein led 13-12 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime.
  • The Mariners outscored the visitors 17-8 in the third quarter for a turning point.
  • A Hudgins jumper at 7:47 in the third gave OU its last lead of 27-26.
  • Monzon hit a jumper and a 3ball on back-to-back possessions as MMA went ahead for good at 31-27 at 7:07.
