Sydney Briscoe pulled down a game-best 13 rebounds, to power the Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team to a 60-54 non-conference victory Wednesday at Colby College at the Margaret M. Crook Center. The Mariners improve to 3-1 on the season while the Mules (2-1) lose for the first time.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Blanchard added two rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action, and Moore notched six rebounds.
- Sophomore Laney Lyle (2 rebounds) dished a career-high five assists to top all playmakers.
Colby Highlights
- Lydia Mordarski and Kate Olenik led the team with 13 points apiece. The former added five rebounds while the latter made seven.
- Chelsea Ibenegbu (4 rebounds) chipped in 11 points, a team-high three assists and led all student-athletes with three steals.
How it Happened
- Junior Evelyn Dagan (11 points, 3 rebounds) made a pair of free throws to put Maine Maritime ahead for good, 53-52, with 3 minutes to go.
- An Olenik layup on the Mules' nine seconds earlier gave the home team their last lead, 52-51, at 3:09.
- Briscoe made a couple key plays under 30 seconds remaining: an offensive rebound following a missed free throw and a steal to seal the win.
- Colby missed three field goals, two missed free throws and had a turnover on its last six possessions.
- Maine Maritime held a 14-11 lead after the first quarter behind Blanchard's five points.
- The Mariners also led 31-25 at the intermission, building the game's biggest advantage of eight points, 31-25, at 1:25 before halftime.
- Colby began the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 32-31 lead on an Ibenegbu free throw at the 4:31 mark.
- The teams traded points before Moore closed the quarter with a put-back layup on a free throw miss and MMA up 40-39 as time expired.
