NAC Men's Basketball Awards Week#2
WATERVILLE, Maine--Maine Maritime Academy senior center
Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany/Abington/Stuttgart) has been named the North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the NAC office announced Monday. This marks the second such honor in as many weeks for Heinz, who led Maine Maritime to a 1-1 week and a runner-up finish at the University of New England Jim Beaudry Classic.
Heinz was named to the event's all-Classic team after averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 12.0 rebounds, shooting 64.0 percent from the field. He also dished six assists.
In an 82-79 win versus the host Nor'Easters, he posted game highs of 30 points (11-15 FGs, 8-8 FTs), 17 rebounds and five assists with two steals. He sealed the win by making two free throws with 19 seconds remaining and grabbing the defensive rebound on UNE's last 3-point attempt to potentially tie it. That marked MMA's first win at UNE in 12 tries and just the second ever in 24 all-time meetings.
In an 82-75 loss to Mitchell, Heinz was double-teamed but still scored 11 points and had seven rebounds while running into foul trouble.
During the season-opening weekend, MMA won the Messiah University Springhill Suites Camp Hill Tip-Off Invitational tournament as Heinz earned most valuable player honors.
The 3-1 Mariners are off to their best four-game start since 2002-03 when that squad began 4-0.
