ANNAPOLIS, Md.--The Maine Maritime Academy sailing team wrapped up its fall schedule this weekend at the Kennedy Cup Regatta, symbolic for keelboat national championship supremacy at the collegiate level. The Mariners scored 45 points to take sixth place at the 10-school event hosted by Navy.
Under sunny skies, temperatures in the high 50's and a 12-14 knot northwest breeze greeted competitors for the opening race of the regatta. In all, five races were held in a range of wind that was 5-14 knots throughout the day, as the wind shifted through 80 degrees back and forth throughout the course of the day on Sunday.
Senior
Kyle Carse captained the MMA boat and he was joined by classmatesÂ
Ella Beauregard,Â
Finn Weeden, and the rest of the crew in juniorsÂ
Jonah Beasley,Â
Sarah Shank, sophomoresÂ
Aiden Pepperd,Â
Drake Reid and freshmanÂ
Teo Crocetti.
"Skipper
Kyle Carse led the team with great poise. Team members felt they could contend to win it, so to be a half-step behind the leaders Navy and College of Charleston was frustrating, but they stuck together and ground out consistent middle of the fleet finishes among the best teams in the country," stated Maine Maritime head coach
Patrick DiLalla. "The podium was within reach as they battled it out for third place with rivals Cal Maritime, Kings Point and Coast Guard."
