Mariners Close Out 2024 with a Regional Victory over Visiting Monks

Depth, tempo carries Maine Maritime to a 71-63 non-conference win over Saint Joseph's (Maine)

CASTINE--Seniors Sydney Briscoe and Erianna Moore scored 18 and 15 points, respectively, to lead the Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team to a 71-63 non-conference victory over visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine at Smith Gymnasium on Saturday. Maine Maritime has won three consecutive games to improve to 6-2 on the season while Saint Joseph's falls to 5-4.

  • Briscoe made 7-of-10 field goal attempts and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds. 
  • Moore led all playmakers with six assists and chipped in six rebounds.
  • Classmate Makenzie Monzon snagged a game-high four steals to match her career high.
SJCME Highlights
  • Grace Ramsdell scored a game-high 19 points on the strength of making 8-of-9 free throw attempts.
  • Angelica Hurley added 17 points and led the Monks with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime outscored the Monks in the paint (32-26), had the advantage with bench depth (22-9) and had its fastbreak in sync (20-2).
  • The Mariners also outrebounded SJCME, 36-27, to generate 11 second-chance points to six for the opponents.
  • The teams were tied 22-22 after the opening quarter, which saw five ties and seven lead changes.
  • In the second quarter, MMA took control by eventually leading 41-28 with 2 minutes and 21 seconds remaining.
  • Moore capped a 13-4 Mariners run with a layup to make the score 35-26.
  • Maine Maritime led 41-33 at the break and never trailed in the second half.
  • Saint Joe's managed to claw back and tie the score at 55-55 at the 8:34 mark of the fourth quarter. Ramsdall converted a layup end an 8-1 run for the Monks.
  • On MMA's ensuing possession, junior Grace Huntwork made her second trey of the second half to put MMA ahead for good.
  • The Mariners enjoyed a two-possession lead the rest of the way to seal the victory.
  • The Monks stayed in the game by making 17 of 21 free throws for 81.0 percent, forcing three MMA starters and a key reserve (junior Jasmine Anderson, 9 points) to sit for several minutes in the second half--all with four fouls.

  • The Monks lead the all-time series 12-5, but the Mariners have won the last three meetings by an average 72-65 score.
  • Maine Maritime went 5-3 in its first eight games last season.
Next Up
  • Maine Maritime will ring in the New Year on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 2-3, when it travels to Babson Park, Mass., to participate in the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament hosted by Babson College. The Mariners will begin 2025 with a date against the host Beavers in the opener, then play Worcester Polytechnic Institute the following afternoon.
