BANGOR, Maine—Sophomore
Jack Banks scored a career-high 21 points, and Maine Maritime established season highs in three-point field goals made and three-point percentage, but Husson turned Mariners turnovers into points to secure an 82-74 victory Wednesday in the North Atlantic Conference men's basketball opener for both schools at William P. Newman Gymnasium. The visiting Mariners fall to 3-3 on the season while the Eagles up their overall record to 3-5.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Senior Curt Heinz recorded a double-double with 13 points (6-12 FGs) and a game-best 13 rebounds, plus seven assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
- Banks finished 9-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range.
- Junior Josiah Dancy (7 points) tied Heinz with a team-high seven assists (against just one turnover) and grabbed four rebounds.
- Seniors Markus Ramirez made 6-of-9 field goals (4-6 3FGs) to net 16 points and Carter Rubin tallied 11 points.
Husson Highlights
- Riles Neff led all scorers with 25 points on 8-for-15 field goal shooting, 4-for-7 from the arc and 5-for-7 free throws. He also had four rebounds, two steals and four assists.
- Jeremy Moronta (10 points, 4 assists) led the Eagles with nine rebounds.
- Gil Matondo scored10 points – all in the second half - and he added six rebounds and four assists.
How it Happened
- The teams combined on 16-of-30 from three-point range alone in the first half, when Husson took a 45-41 lead at the intermission.
- The Eagles led by as many as 12 points, 25-13, with 12 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
- A Dancy layup at 18:34 of the second half gave MMA its first lead of the game, 48-47.
- Ramirez nailed a 3ball at the 17:19 mark to give the Mariners their biggest lead of the night at 51-47, and made a jumper at 16:26 for another four-point edge, 53-49.
- The teams then traded points over the next 6 minutes as Banks hit a jumper to give MMA its final lead, 59-58, with 10:49 to go in the game.
- The Eagles, however, iced the win with a 14-4 run over a 6:43 span to take a commanding 72-63 lead at the 4:06 mark.
- Maine Maritime committed a season-low 13 turnovers, but Husson was opportunistic by converting those miscues into 21 points (3 for MMA).
- There were six lead changes and two ties.
- The Eagles' bench outscored the Mariners, 25-6.
- Husson made nine more free throws (12-18) than MMA attempted (3-3).
