Curt Heinz recorded a double-double with game highs of 32 points and 14 rebounds, but the Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team had its North Atlantic Conference home opener spoiled by UMaine-Farmington, 87-73, at Smith Gymnasium on Saturday. The Mariners fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the NAC East Division, while the visiting Beavers up their records to 3-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Junior Josiah Dancy tallied 16 points, a game-high seven assists and he had four rebounds.
- Freshman Gabe Hagar came off the bench to have a career game that included nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
- Heinz finished 13-for-21 from the field and 6-for-6 at the free throw stripe. He also had a blocked shot and steal.
UMF Highlights
- Simon Chadbourne led a balanced Beavers offense with 27 points on nine 3-pointers, followed by Will Harriman (9-15 FGs) and Jason Reynolds (6-10 FGs) with 13 points each, and Jordan Anthony, 10.
- Dylan Griffin (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Anthony had five assists apiece as UMF had seven passers with three assists or more.
How it Happened
- UMF made 34-of-57 field goal attempts (13-26 3FGs) for a .596 shooting percentage, while MMA shot 43.8 percent (28-64).
- The Beavers also outscored the Mariners off turnovers, 21-7, and on bench points, 33-14.
- The visitors raced to a 17-4 lead with 13 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
- The Mariners eventually clawed back and took a 25-24 lead on a Dancy 3ball at the 5:21 mark, capping a 21-7 run. Heinz and Dancy spurred the comeback with 10 and six points, respectively.
- After Heinz made a layup to give MMA its biggest lead at 27-24, UMF ended the first half on a 13-0 run to go into the intermission break with a 37-27 advantage.
- In the second half, the Mariners were unable to cut the deficit to single digits as the Beavers led by as many as 20 points (63-43).
- Maine Maritime grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to outscore UMF on second-chance points, 23-9, to try to stay close in the first half.
