FORT KENT, Maine – Aiden Grady banged a pair of threes in overtime to propel the University of Maine-Fort Kent to a 74-69 win over Maine Maritime in men's basketball Wednesday evening. Grady led Fort Kent with 18 points on the night. He was one of three Bengals to finish in double digits in the points column, joining Maksim Vukcevic with 16 and Souleymayne Barro with a dozen.
Grady's first overtime trifecta came 39 seconds into the extra period giving the Bengals the lead for the fifth and final time in the contest. He struck again just under two minutes later to give UMFK a 70-66 lead. The Mariners cut the lead down to three with 21 seconds remaining on a
Carter Quiggins three before Katsuya Sasaki sunk a pair of free throws eight seconds later to put the game on ice.
The game was nip and tuck throughout with neither team able to pull away. Fort Kent led by as many as eight points twice, including midway through the second half. The Mariners erased the lead and went ahead 56-55 with 3:33 remaining on a
Jack Banks jumper. The Bengals reclaimed the lead before
Isaiah Oquendo knotted it at 62 apiece with 63 ticks remaining.
Curt Heinz nailed a pair from the charity stripe with 19 seconds left to make it a 64-62 game in favor of Maine Maritime.
Grady missed a layup, but Barro collected the carom with eight seconds left and knotted it up, drawing a foul in the process. He missed on the go-ahead shot allowing the game to move into the extra session. The Bengals outrebounded the Mariners 39-31 on the night and managed 26 points off 13 offensive boards. Fort Kent connected on 11 of 23 treys, compared to Maine Maritime's 5-of-17 night from beyond the arc.
Heinz posted his 17
th double-double of the season pouring in 32 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Heinz led all scorers topping 30 points for the fourth time this season. His 32 points represented his second-best night in the points column this season. Quiggins finished with 14 points on a 5-of-8 night from the floor.
With the loss, Maine Maritime slips to 10-13 on the season. Fort Kent improved to 9-11. The teams split the season series with each team picking up a victory in their own gym.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday at Thomas College. Opening tip is slated for 1:00 pm.
