CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime's
Alex Stevens scores a game-winning goal seconds into overtime to lead the Mariners to a 16-15 victory over non-conference opponent University of Southern Maine.
Maine Maritime came out firing first with back-to-back goals from
Sam Nichol and
Jayden Wilson. The Huskies answered with a run of their own, scoring four consecutive goals in the first and into the second quarter to take a 4-2 led. The Mariners dominated the rest of the second quarter, scoring six straight goals sparked by Nichol to only two for the Huskies.
The second half was more back-and-forth action, with neither team leading by more than two. Late in the fourth quarter, the Mariners took a 14-12 lead on the Huskies with six minutes left in regulation. USM wasn't finished yet, scoring three consecutive goals to take the lead at 15-14 with three minutes left. Nichol bullied his way to the back of the net, knotting the game at 15 all. Neither team could score in the last two and a half minutes, sending the match into overtime.
Overtime was quick and easy as
Bryce Crowell won the faceoff, and
Alex Stevens scored off an assist from Wilson in under 10 seconds to end the sudden death overtime period.
Maine Maritime outshot the Huskies by 18 attempts, while picking up 20 more ground balls. Crowell dominated the X for the Mariners going 30-33 on the night.
Both teams stuck with their starting goalie for the night, with
Garrett Ruszkowski making 17 saves and Wyatt McIntrye tallied 19.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00pm when they host Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
