CASTINE, Maine – Lilly Diversi scored seven goals, including the game winner, to lead Maine Maritime to a 18-2 women's lacrosse victory over Vermont State-Lyndon on Saturday.
The Mariners (2-3) scored the first seven goals of the game with
Rebecca Caron opening the scoring at the 9:07 mark with help from
Aubrey Mitchell. Two minutes and a second later,
Hazel Stoddard scored her first of the day before assisting Diversi's first 1:07 later. Diversi ripped off two more goals in succession to complete the natural hat trick, but she wasn't done for the day. Diversi, Stoddard and Caron accounted for all the Mariners' 19 goals. In addition to the seven from Diversi, Stoddard scored six and Caron added five.
The Mariners established a new program record for assists in a game with 13.
Bella Scolaro and
Frances Spangler each contributed four assists to the Mariners' victory, while
Chloe Coombs added a pair. In addition to her six goals and assist, Stoddard won nine draws, caused six turnovers, and collected six ground balls. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the 8-meter. Diversi was 2-for-2 from the line. Caron recorded eight draw controls, four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Maine Maritime outshot Lyndon 40-4 in the win and held an 18-5 advantage on draws. The Mariners scooped up 27 ground balls to the Hornets' (0-2) nine.
Maine Maritime returns to action Wednesday night at Thomas College for a 7:00 pm contest.
