BIDDEFORD, Maine – Five different players scored as Maine Maritime picked up a 9-7 win at the University of New England in the Mariners season opener. The win marks the second time that MMA (1-0) has defeated UNE (1-4) in seven games played against the Nor'Easters. It was MMA's first win over UNE since March 12, 2001, and was also the first road win in the series for the Mariners.
Alex Stevens recorded three goals and an assist to lead the Mariners attack. His extra-man goal with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter gave Maine Maritime its first lead of the afternoon, and one they did not relinquish. The Mariners capitalized on three of the 12 extra man opportunities afford them. Maine Maritime fended off all five of the Nor'Easters extra-man chances.
Sam Nichol contributed two goals and as many assists in the win, while
Brendan Reddington found the net twice.
Finnian O'Donnell recorded a team-high six ground balls.
Garrett Ruszkowski stood tall for the Mariners turning aside 17 shots in claiming his first win of the new season. Evan Hazard made 14 saves at the other end of the field.
UNE was the beneficiary of four goals and an assist from Shea Fogarty. Ben Gowell recorded a game-high 11 ground balls and won 14-of-20 faceoffs on the day.
The Mariners return to action next Saturday at New England College. The opening faceoff is set for 4:00 pm in Henniker.
