CASTINE, Maine – 14 Mariners scored as Maine Maritime men's lacrosse opens up conference play with a 29-5 victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Trailblazers on Saturday afternoon.
The Mariners set the tone early scoring in the first ten seconds of regulation after
Bryce Crowell won the opening faceoff and assisted
Alex Stevens in the middle of the field. The Trailblazers answered with a goal of their own before
Jacob Hintermaier hit two goals and
Jayden Wilson found the back of the net for the Mariners. MCLA scored one more goal in the half, while the Mariners poured in 14 more in the first half to make the score 18-2 going into the half.
The second half was more of the same action with the Mariners outscoring the Trailblazers 11-3 to secure a victory.
Hintermaier scored a game-high five goals and four assists, Wilson and Stevens each had four goals while Wilson dished about four assists as well,
Xander Gurney scored a career-high three goals,
Riley Morin,
Jaden Knight, and
Addison Thawley each had two goals, and seven more Mariners each had one goal.
The Mariners held a 68-33 advantage in shots and a 60-25 edge in ground balls. Maine Maritime won 28 of the 37 faceoffs thanks to Crowell and
Cole Michaud.
Will Farrell got the win in net for the Mariners, playing the entire first half and making four saves.
Andrew Noyes and
Alden Gomez each played 15 minutes and each making three saves, while Neal Brierley played all 60 minutes for the Trailblazers and tallied 17 saves.
Maine Maritime men's lacrosse returns to action on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00pm when they host Morrisville State College in a North Atlantic Conference matchup on Ritchie Field.
