GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer fell to the University of Southern Maine 10-2, on Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Hannaford Field.
How it Happened: The Huskies (1-0) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second minute, on the foot of Catriona Gould. Maine Maritime's Taylor Webster (Canoga Park, Calif.) evened things up in the 20th minute and the Mariners benefited from a Huskies own-goal under a minute later to take a 2-1 lead.
USM responded to their miscue with two goals in 62 seconds, and another right before halftime to take a 4-2 lead into the intermission.
The second half was all Huskies, as they added six more goals to claim the 10-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers: Southern Maine outshot the Mariners 41-6, while landing 27 shots on net compared to the Mariners' six. USM held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gould ended the evening with a hat-trick for the Huskies, while teammate Makyla Magid added a pair of goals.
Isa Thesing (Sulphur Springs, Texas) collected 17 saves in net for the Mariners in the loss, while Breanna Atwood and Hunter Stonebraker split time in net for the Huskies, recording two saves each.
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season and look to bounce back on Sunday, September 1 when they host the University of New England at 1:00 pm.
