Mariners Come From Behind to Pounce on Visiting Bobcats in Five Sets

Maine Maritime outlasted Bates 24-26, 25-17, 12-25, 26-24, 15-8

CASTINE--Sophomore Ally Hadley posted season and match highs of 18 kills, four service aces, five total blocks and 25 points to help the Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball earn a hard-fought come-from-behind five-set victory over previously undefeated Bates in Smith Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The set scores were 24-26, 25-17, 12-25, 26-24, 15-8. Bates falls to 3-1 on the season while Maine Maritime is now 3-4 overall.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior setter Katie Albritton dished up a season-high 43 assists while finding six teammates who produced multiple kills.
  • Hadley also contributed nine digs while senior Sydney Rich had 10 for a season's best.
  • Sophomore Sydney Williams added 10 kills.
  • Junior Ila Smith produced nine terminations on a match-best .471 attack percentage on 17 swings with just one error.
  • Freshman Hannah Tate made 12 digs.
Bates Highlights
  • Ami Evans Emma Patard and Anaïs Reneaum-Lavoie (.438 attack percentage) paced the Bobcats with 18, 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
  • Skye Higashihara had 50 assists and Sami Kim made 14 digs to lead all student-athletes.
First Set
  • Bates took a 1-0 lead in the match in an opening frame that saw neither team lead by more than two points.
  • MMA had a 23-21 lead but the Bobcats scored five of the next points to win by two points.
Second Set
  • The Mariners evened things up with a convincing eight-point cushion. MMA led 10-8 before going on an 8-1 run to take command 18-9.
  • MMA held Bates to a .083 attack percentage in the frame.
Third Set
  • The visiting Bobcats reclaimed a 2-sets-to-1 lead by outhitting MMA .429 to .214.
Fourth Set
  • The Mariners, however, rebounded and held off Bates with a two-point win to force a decisive stanza.
  • MMA, which had leads of 8-1 and 11-3, saw the Bobcats eventually come back to knot the score 24-all.
  • Back-to-back kills from Hadley and senior Chloe Weeks put an end to a Bates 8-3 run and gave the home team the momentum.
Fifth Set
  • MMA turned up the defensive heat by holding Bates to a minus-.077 attack percentage. The offense also had its best performance with a .267 success rate.
  • The Mariners had another quick start to a set and never trailed to seal the win. They held leads of 4-1 and 8-2 before scoring the final five points of the match.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Albritton continues her climb on the school's all-time assists chart with 2,237 for her career for third place.
  • MMA is 2-1 in five-set matches this season overall.
  • Bates leads the all-time series 12-7, but the Mariners have won the last two meetings.
  • MMA is 4-0 in five-setters over Bates.
