BRUNSWICK, Maine--The Maine Maritime Academy sailing team competed Saturday in the Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin College on the waters of Harpswell Sound. The Mariners scored 126 points for ninth place ahead of Bentley University (144), Bates College (153), Massachusetts Maritime Academy (154), Williams College (156) and Middlebury College (192).

Maine Maritime posted a 65 in the A Division race, followed by a 61 in the B. Boston University edged the host Polar Bears to capture the Trophy, 33 to 38.

Seven races were completed in both division before the breeze shut off around 5 p.m. A division sailed Flying Junior all day with B division in 420s. The breeze ranged from 3-10 knots out of the southeast-northeast. All courses were W-4s.

This regatta is in memory of Nicholas Barnett, Bowdoin Class of 2011, who died in a car accident during the Thanksgiving break of his freshman year.

Last year's event was canceled, but the Mariners bested their last outing against the Barnett Trophy field during the 2022-23 campaign when they finished 13th.

The Mariners are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, Sep. 21-22, sending teams to the University of Vermont Ross Trophy, Courageous Sailing Center in New Bedford, Mass., and Dartmouth College Mrs. Hurst Trophy, a women's event.
