CASTINE--For the second-straight outing, the Maine Maritime Academy defense was stifling. And it produced the same result: a Mariners sweep. This time, the Maine Maritime women's volleyball team dismantled previously undefeated UMaine-Fort Kent, 25-13, 25-10, 25-20, holding the Bengals to a minus-.123 attack percentage, in a non-conference match at Smith Gymnasium on Friday evening. Maine Maritime improves to 5-7 on the season while UMFK drops to 7-1.
MMA Highlights
- Sophomore Ally Hadley led the way with a double-double of 12 assists and 10 digs, and rounded out her statline with seven kills, a match-best four service aces and four total blocks.
- Senior setter Katie Albritton dished up 14 assists and made seven kills.
- Junior Ila Smith led all attackers with eight terminations (.889) and all defenders with five blocks.
- Freshman Hannah Tate led all student-athletes with 12 digs and chipped in six assists.
UMFK Highlights
- Carla Rodriguez led the team with 14 assists, while Jamilyn Amina and Maria Pena both had four kills.
First Set
- The Mariners took advantage of minus-.300 hitting by UMFK and had three more kills (11) than the visitors had errors (8) to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- Trailing 8-4, MMA reeled off 12 unanswered points--all on Grace Jennings' serve--to take a 16-8 lead. During the run, Jennings had three aces in a row and Smith put down three kills.
Second Set
- The Mariners had their best set offensively, outhitting UMFK .367 to minus-.094.
- MMA jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 10-3 to not look back and go up two-sets-to-none.
Third Set
- UMFK tried to get back into the match by going ahead by scores of 6-4 and 8-5.
- The Mariners scored five of the next six points to move ahead 10-9.
- The teams then traded points before the Bengals went up 20-19 that ended with a four-point scoring run and a MMA timeout.
- The Mariners responded by winning the last six points--including kills from four different Mariners--to clinch the victory.
Beyond the Boxscore
- Maine Maritime also dominated the boxscore: kills (34-14), aces (11-8), team blocks (7-1), digs (41-27) and points (52-23).
- The Mariners have won 12 consecutive meetings to take an 18-7 all-time series lead over the Bengals, who compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
- Tonight's minus-.123 attack percentage is the lowest MMA has held an opponent since Oct. 29, 2023, when host VTSU Lyndon mustered a minus-.157.
- Before the match, the current team honored volleyball alumnae who were in attendance, including Jenna King McCourt, Kayley Rodriguez, Melissa Lail, Callie Reese, as well as former coaches Katrina Dagan, Tricia Carver.
