Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. – The Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball team ventured on the road for the first time on Friday evening when they opened the 2024 MIT Invitational with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Endicott College, 20-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-8. The Mariners fall even to 2-2 while the Gulls improve to 4-0.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Sophomore Ally Hadley led the team with eight kills and 15 assists along with eight digs.
- Classmate Sydney Williams and junior Sam Urch (.375) both had seven kills.
- Freshman Hannah Tate led all student-athletes with 13 digs.
- Junior Ila Smith added six kills on a .400 attack percentage, five digs and a match-high four total blocks.
- Senior Katie Albritton contributed 14 assists.
Endicott Highlights
- Hadley Helenbrook and Ava Grace Dresback led the offense with 22 and 10 kills, respectively.
- Emma Ruel had eight digs to surpass 1,000 for her career.
How it Happened (First Set)
- Maine Maritime got off to a good start with a 9-5 lead as Williams had three kills in the stretch, causing EC to take a timeout.
- Back-to-back kills from Williams gave MMA a 15-10 lead and prompted another Gulls timeout.
- MMA built as much as a 17-12 lead before Endicott managed to get within 22-20, but the Mariners clinched the 1-0 lead in the match on Hadley's serve. Urch sandwiched a kill and a stuff block around a Hadley ace.
- Both teams hit well in the frame 433 to .310 in favor of the Mariners.
How it Happened (Second Set)
- Endicott forged a 6-3 start before MMA rallied to tie it 7-7.
- MMA then took a 12-9 lead before the Gulls answered with a four-point run to go up 13-12.
- Hadley had a big swing for a kill down the left line that gave the Mariners a 15-14 lead.
- Urch produced a kill off the block to extend MMA's lead to 21-18.
- But Endicott regrouped for a 7-1 run to even the match one set apiece.
- Despite losing the set, the Mariners outhit the Gulls .333 to .289.
How it Happened (Third Set)
- Endicott led wire-to-wire to go up 2-1 after hitting .500 while holding MMA to .034
How it Happened (Fourth Set)
- The Gulls continued their momentum by racing to leads of 5-0 and 12-1 to close the match.
