Men's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Lesley, 82-56

Senior co-captain Curt Heinz performs the 11th triple-double in NCAA Division III this season

LEXINGTON, Mass.--Senior co-captain Curt Heinz registered a triple-double with game highs of 22 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists as Maine Maritime Academy had a big second half to earn an 82-56 victory at Lesley University in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at Minuteman Gymnasium on Friday evening.

Maine Maritime has won three games in a row to push its overall record to 6-5 and 3-2 in the NAC-East Division while Lesley drops to 3-12 on the season and 0-4 in the NAC-West.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior Markus Ramirez made seven of 10 field goal attempts, including 5-of-8 from three-point land, to net 19 points.
  • Sophomore Jack Banks came off the bench to tally 18 points on 9-for-14 field goal shooting in 22 minutes. He also had six rebounds.
  • Junior Kaden Horner pulled down a career-high six rebounds, while Heinz added four blocked shots to his monster performance.
Lesley Highlights
  • CJ Leonard paced the Lynx with 13 points and six rebounds.
  • Tavon Rhodes scored 10 points and matched Leonard with a team-best six rebounds.
  • Christian Castro contributed 10 points and five rebounds, and Hezekiah Brown led all student-athletes with three steals.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime, which led just 34-26 at the intermission, outscored Lesley 48-30 in the second half to turn a close game into a rout.
  • The Mariners shot 55.9 percent from the field (19-34) over the last 20 minutes to separate themselves from the Lynx, who shot 35.4 for the contest.
  • There were two ties and three lead changes in the game's opening 6 minutes, but MMA took control with a 14-0 run over a span of 6 minutes and 28 seconds that turned a 9-9 tie into a 23-9 cushion at the 8:29 mark. Back-to-back treys by Ramirez sparked the scoring spurt.
  • A three-pointer by Tarell Joseph (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) to begin the second half cut the deficit to 34-29, but that would be the closest the Lynx would get the rest of the way.
  • The Mariners responded with a 21-6 run in 7:09 to increase their lead to 55-35 with 12:00 remaining. Ramirez again ignited the run with a 3ball.
  • Maine Maritime held a 15-point-plus lead for the final 16:08.
  • The Mariners also had a 20-8 advantage on points off turnovers.
