Mariners Best Bears in Non-NAC Matchup of Division III Academies

Senior Sydney Briscoe posted a double-double of game highs 18 points, 11 rebounds

CASTINE--Senior Sydney Briscoe recorded another double-double with game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team turned back the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 68-57, in a non-conference game at Smith Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are now 11-3 on the season.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Sophomore Hailey Blanchard scored 10 points, had two rebounds and she made a pair of steals.
  • Junior Evelyn Dagan tallied 11 points on three 3-pointers and had two assists.
  • Briscoe made 7-of-13 field goal attempts and all four free throw tries while passing for three assists.
  • Classmate Erianna Moore (9 points) pulled down 10 rebounds and led the team with four assists.
USCGA Highlights
  • Dorothy Stotts netted 14 points to lead the team and led all playmakers with five assists.
  • Kelly Hagerty had 12 on 6-for-11 shooting and topped the squad with seven rebounds.
  • Julia Mann contributed 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime never trailed after taking a 16-12 first-quarter lead.
  • The Mariners, who led 35-30 at halftime, led by as many as 18 points on back-to-back treys by Moore to start the fourth quarter (58-40).
  • Coast Guard was able to stay in the game by outscoring the home team 13-3 on second-chance points with 13 offensive rebounds. (MMA had a 42-38 overall advantage.)
  • Maine Maritime outscored the visitors inside the paint, 24-14.
  • The Mariners limited the Bears to a .317 field goal percentage (20-63) while making 42.9 percent of their shots (24-56).
  • Maine Maritime went 11-for-12 for 91.7 percent at the free throw line for a season's best, while USCGA went 15-for-23 for just 65.2 percent.
  • A Stotts jumper gave the Bears their only lead at 2-0. There were two ties after that.
