BLOOMINGTON, Minn.--Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball center
Curt Heinz has made program history with his selection to the Scoutware/ D3hoops.com National Team of the Week, the media outlet that covers NCAA Division III basketball announced on Tuesday. Heinz becomes the fourth Mariners student-athlete ever to be named to this national honor (
MMA has had three honorees on the women's side) and the first since 2007, Week 7.
A senior co-captain from Stuttgart, Germany (Abington, Stuttgart High School), Heinz nearly averaged a triple-double while shooting 59 percent from the field (26-for-44) during MMA's 3-0 conference week, picking up
North Atlantic Conference Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Week awards a day earlier. He averaged 25 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots on the week. Besides scoring and rebounding, he also led the Mariners with 22 assists and 11 blocked shots. His best game was 22 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists against Lesley--just the 11th triple-double in a Division III men's contest this season and his first in two years.
Heinz leads the NAC with 13.6 rebounds per game and is just one-tenth of a point off the scoring average lead at 20.0 ppg (VSU-Johnson's Matthew Carter averages 20.1). He also overtook first place in the NAC in blocked shots over the week's span (22 total, 2.0 per game).
Maine Maritime returns to Smith Gymnasium to start a three-game homestand on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) against NAC opponent Thomas College.
