Mariners Rally to Stun #RV Tigers in Battle of NAC Women's Basketball Division Leaders

Sydney Briscoe led the Mariners' 61-57 comeback win with 12 points and 16 rebounds

CASTINE--In a showdown of North Atlantic Conference women's basketball division leaders, SUNY-Cobleskill built a 15-point lead late in the first half before Maine Maritime Academy made a spirited second-half comeback to stun the visitors, 61-57, at Smith Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners improve to 14-3 on the season and 8-0 in the NAC-East Division, while the Fighting Tigers slip to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in the NAC-West.

  • Senior Sydney Briscoe notched another double-double with a team-leading 12 points and game-high 16 rebounds. She also had two blocked shots.
  • Classmate Makenzie Monzon and junior Evelyn Dagan chipped in 11 points apiece.

How it Happened
  • After a tightly contested first quarter in which Cobleskill had a slim 17-15 lead, the Tigers outscored the Mariners 21-11 in the second.
  • To end the first half, May made a free throw to give Cobleskill a seemingly commanding 38-23 advantage before Dagan swished a trey to make the deficit a dozen points.
  • Maine Maritime won the third quarter 12-7 to get within 45-38 to set the stage for a decisive fourth frame.
  • The Mariners opened the final stanza with a 10-2 run to go up 48-47 on a trey by junior Grace Huntwork (9 points) with 6 minutes and 40 seconds left for their first lead since 15-12 (a Huntwork 3-pointer) at the 1:17 mark of the first quarter.
