Men's Basketball Matches Longest Win Streak in 25 Years with 79-51 Victory

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team is on its best winning streak in a quarter-century after shooting 50.0 percent from the field to cruise past visiting SUNY-Cobleskill, 79-51, in North Atlantic Conference action at Smith Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners improve to 9-5 on the season and 6-2 in the NAC-East Division, while the Cobleskill now stands at 4-11 overall and 1-6 in the NAC-West.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior co-captain Curt Heinz recorded game highs of 22 points (9-11 FGs), nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.
  • Classmate and fellow co-captain Carter Rubin scored 15 points (4-6 FGs), grabbed six rebounds and made two steals.
  • Sophomore Jack Banks and senior Markus Ramirez contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Junior Josiah Dancy (4 points, 4 rebounds) matched Heinz with a game-best five assists.

  • Chace Peterson led the Fighting Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Marquay Tanksley added 10 points on 5-for-10 field goal shooting and three steals to top all student-athletes.
How it Happened
  • The Mariners made 30 of 59 field goal attempts for 50.8 percent and held Cobleskill to 18-for-58, or 31.0 percent.
  • Maine Maritime dominated the paint, 42-18, and had a deeper bench, 21-8.
  • The Mariners also had a 40-34 rebounding edge.
  • Maine Maritime took a 6-0 lead on treys by Carter and freshman Gabe Hagar (6 points, 6 rebounds) before Cobleskill responded with an 8-0 run over a span of 1 minute and 37 seconds.
  • Eventually, a Tanksley layup gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the day at 12-8 at the 14:10 mark.
  • A minute later, Heinz converted a pair of free throws to make it 16-15 and the Mariners led for good by ending the first half on a 22-12 run.
  • Maine Maritime took a 38-27 halftime lead.
  • In the second half, the Mariners scored the first seven points to increase their advantage to 45-27 and they wouldn't be threatened after that.
