Mariners Bury the Badgers with Balanced Effort, 73-19

Evelyn Dagan led 11 MMA scorers with 10 points and Sydney Briscoe had a game-high 10 rebounds

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team employed a balanced offense and suffocating defense on the way to a convincing 73-19 victory Monday over visiting Vermont State University-Johnson at Smith Gymnasium. 

Maine Maritime improves to 8-3 on the season and 3-0 in the North Atlantic Conference, while VSU-Johnson is winless in 12 starts overall (0-2 NAC).

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Junior Evelyn Dagan led 11 MMA scorers with 10 points--all in the first half.
  • Senior Sydney Briscoe had a game-high 10 rebounds, plus six points, three assists and three steals.
  • Freshman Addison Forry scored a career-high nine points, adding seven rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
  • Junior Grace Huntwork notched a season-high nine points on a trio of treys.
VSU-Johnson Highlights
  • Riann Fortin scored a game-high 12 points and led the Badgers with five rebounds. She also had two steals.
  • Kristie Zator (5 points) also had five rebounds.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime led buzzer-to-buzzer, taking quick command with a 25-5 lead after the first quarter when it shot 64.3 percent from the field.
  • The Mariners' advantage ballooned to 45-14 at halftime.
  • Maine Maritime took advantage of 26 Badger turnovers that generated 29 points.
  • The Mariners limited VSU-Johnson to just 12.5 percent (5-40) from the field and zero Badger three-pointers made.
  • MMA controlled the glass (53-28) and outscored the Badgers on second-chance points, 25-2.
  • The Mariners established season highs in three-pointers made (13/30) and 3-point field goal percentage (.433).
  • Maine Maritime outscored the Badgers in the paint, 28-10.
