CASTINE, Maine — Friday-night football returned to Castine as the Maine Maritime Academy football team dropped a 77-14 Commonwealth Coast Football matchup at home against the University of New England on Friday night.
UNE (5-1, 2-1 CCF) led 28-0 after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 42-0 before Maine Maritime (0-6, 0-3 CCF) got on the board.
Freshman
Ethan Farrell sparked the Mariners' offense with an impressive 74-yard kickoff return that set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore
Will Keach to sophomore
Auston Harris, making it 42-7.
The Nor'easters returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to push the lead to 49-7, but Farrell answered with a 71-yard kickoff return that Harris capped with an 8-yard touchdown run.
UNE added another score before halftime and three more in the second half to come away with the 77-14 win.
Harris led the Mariners offensively, finishing with 124 rushing yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.
Freshman
Theo Blanke led Maine Maritime defensively with 10 tackles, while sophomores
Lucas Houghton and
Matt Gagin each added nine stops. Gagin also recorded one tackle for loss. Freshman
Connor Cuba added eight tackles, and sophomore
James Boyer-Russell tallied six.
The Mariners travel to Henniker, New Hampshire, on Saturday for a conference road matchup against New England College beginning at noon.
