CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team picked up a much-needed North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday, defeating the University of Maine at Presque Isle 3-0 at home.
Maine Maritime (5-3-5, 3-1-3 NAC) struck for the eventual game-winning goal in the 11th minute when junior
Holden Nichols played a ball into the 18-yard box to fellow junior
James Baur, who deked out the goalkeeper and put the Mariners up 1-0 over UMPI (4-9-1, 2-5-1 NAC).
Senior
John-John Dickenson extended the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute with his fifth goal of the season.
Junior
Gabriel Toledo added an insurance goal in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty kick to seal the win for MMA.
The Mariners finished with a 26-10 advantage in total shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. They also earned an impressive 17 corner kicks.
Freshmen
Kole Wayman and
Ian Shellabarger combined for the shutout, each recording one save.
Maine Maritime travels to Lesley University on Sunday for a NAC matchup beginning at 2:30 p.m.
