LEXINGTON, Mass. — Senior
John-John Dickenson and junior
Gabriel Toledo combined for four goals to lift the Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team to a much-needed North Atlantic Conference victory over Lesley University on Sunday.
Maine Maritime (6-3-5, 4-1-3 NAC) struck first on a goal from Dickenson in the 35th minute, but Lesley (1-10-3, 1-4-3 NAC) quickly responded with the equalizer in the 37th minute.
The tie was short-lived, as Toledo converted a penalty kick — his second straight game scoring from the spot — to give the Mariners a 2-1 advantage in the 38th minute.
Lesley answered before halftime, netting back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 44th minutes to take a 3-2 lead into the break.
The Lynx appeared poised to hold on for the win, keeping the Mariners in check for much of the second half. But Maine Maritime mounted a dramatic late rally. Toledo buried his second penalty kick of the game in the 88th minute to tie the match, and Dickenson finished a pass from junior
Matthew Villeneuve in the 89th minute to lift the Mariners to a thrilling 4-3 road victory.
Lesley finished the afternoon with a 14-11 edge in total shots and a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Reagan Moynihan recorded six saves over 90 minutes to earn the win.
Maine Maritime now returns home to host Husson University on Saturday in a pivotal NAC matchup with the No. 2 spot in the conference standings on the line.
