Men’s soccer withstands UMF second-half surge to advance to NAC semifinals

CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team held off a late second-half surge from No. 5 University of Maine at Farmington to advance to the North Atlantic Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday evening.

Maine Maritime (7-4-5) wasted little time getting on the board, striking just five minutes into the match. Junior Gabriel Toledo played a ball through to junior Aiden Burr, who buried it to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead over UMF (5-9-3).

Toledo doubled the advantage in the 13th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from junior James Baur to make it 2-0.

The Mariners extended their lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute when Toledo notched his second assist of the night. He lofted a pass behind the UMF back line that senior John-John Dickenson ran down just ahead of a charging Beavers goalkeeper before slipping it into the back of the net.

MMA appeared to be in control following a scoreless opening 20 minutes of the second half, but Farmington didn't go down quietly. The Beavers broke through in the 66th minute and added another in the 72nd to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Despite the late pressure, Maine Maritime held strong defensively to close out the match and secure a spot in the NAC semifinals.

UMF finished with a 16-11 edge in total shots, while the Mariners held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

With the win, Maine Maritime advances to face No. 1 seed Thomas College on the road Saturday at 6 p.m.
