Mariners Build Mid-Season Momentum at Hewitt Trophy

Hewitt Trophy Recap
Racing in shifting fall conditions on Harpswell Sound, Maine Maritime Academy sailors delivered a steady weekend at the Hewitt Trophy hosted by Bowdoin College. After light winds delayed Saturday's start, racing got underway in 6–10 knots with challenging currents shaping the early races. Sunday brought another light breeze that filled just enough for four more races before the cutoff time.

Maine Maritime's two teams showed consistency across both divisions and composure in the tricky current. Mariners 1 placed sixth overall, while Mariners 2 finished just behind in twelfth—solid results that reflect the team's growing depth and continued development in the fall season.

For Mariners 1, the A-Division duo was Isaac Thompson '28 at helm and William Ries '26 as crew, while the B-Division skipper was Toby Clarkson '29 with Isabel Dickson '30.

For Mariners 2, first-years Skye Johnson Alistair Knoblauch split the helm with crew Simone Ford '29, and the B-Division helm/crew were Elliot Condon '29 and Julianna DeMarco '26.

"We don't always have the chance to send multiple teams to an event," said associate coach Delaney Conlogue, "so having this opportunity at this point in the season to get more sailors on competitive starting lines keeps building this wave of momentum and puts us in position to make a splash at the NEISA championships in just a couple weeks' time."

Looking Forward
The Mariners women travel to MIT for the Atlantic Coast Tournament 10/11-12 while the keelboat team heads to the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (IOR) hosted by Storm Trysail at Larchmont Yacht Club.
