CASTINE, Maine — Junior
Gabriel Toledo powered home two late goals to lift the Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team to a last-second 3-2 home win over the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Wednesday evening.
Maine Maritime (2-2-5) and UMFK (1-2-2) battled to a scoreless opening half in the in-state nonconference matchup, with the Bengals holding a slight 8-3 advantage in shots. All three of the Mariners' attempts landed on target compared to two for UMFK.
The second half told a different story, as both teams finished even with seven shots apiece.
After nearly 70 scoreless minutes, UMFK benefited from an own goal by the Mariners in the 70th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
It looked as though the own goal might come back to haunt the Mariners as time wound down, but a costly foul by the Bengals inside the 18-yard box set up a penalty kick for Maine Maritime. Toledo converted, sneaking the attempt into the lower left corner to tie the game 1-1 in the 84th minute.
Four minutes later, Fort Kent responded with a go-ahead goal to regain the lead, 2-1, in the 88th minute. But the Mariners didn't go down without a fight. After Fort Kent failed to clear a ball inside its 18-yard box, the ball bounced to the foot of senior
Ronnie Morgan, who powered in the tying goal with just over a minute remaining.
Fort Kent missed on a scoring opportunity on its next possession, giving the Mariners one final chance. Another costly Bengals foul set up a free kick for Maine Maritime, and Toledo connected from 38 yards out, placing the ball in the top corner with under 10 seconds remaining to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Mariners will travel to Vermont this weekend for a North Atlantic Conference series, taking on Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Vermont State University Johnson on Sunday.
