STANDISH, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team came up just short in its season opener Wednesday night, falling 81-73 on the road to Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
The Mariners (0-1) got off to a strong start, leading 18-16 after the first quarter and carrying a 35-33 advantage into halftime. The Monks (2-1) rallied in the third to tie the game 54-54, setting up a decisive fourth quarter.
Saint Joseph's took control late, outscoring Maine Maritime 27-19 in the final frame to secure the win.
Both teams shot 40.9 percent from the field, but the Monks held the edge from long range, connecting on 48.1 percent of their 3-point attempts compared to 33.3 percent for the Mariners.
Sophomore
Addison Forry paced MMA with a team-high 18 points and a career-best 10 rebounds, earning her first collegiate double-double. Senior
Jacquelin Castro added 16 points and nine boards, while junior
Hailey Blanchard chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Junior
Laney Lyle also reached double figures with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Mariners dominated inside with a 40-28 advantage in points in the paint, but Saint Joseph's bench contributed a key 22-11 scoring edge.
Maine Maritime now turns its attention to North Atlantic Conference play, hosting SUNY Delhi on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., followed by SUNY Cobleskill on Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.
