Men’s swimming & diving sweeps Keene State, Husson in dual-meet action

BANGOR, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's swimming & diving team claimed a pair of victories Saturday evening, defeating Keene State College 192-97 and edging Husson University 142-139.

The Mariners opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as freshmen Connor Hedstrom and Tim Reda teamed with seniors Fox Fernald and Oliver Cox to post a 1:43.87.

Senior James Creegan secured MMA's first individual win of the night in the 1,000-yard freestyle with an 11:09.62, followed closely by freshman B Boyer in second at 11:13.41. Reda added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:57.00, while freshman Ryan Johnson Rees took fourth with a 1:59.17.

Hedstrom collected his first win of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 55.87. Freshman Dominic Miele placed third with a 59.85, and Fernald followed in fourth at 1:04.42. Freshman Jack Davis finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.46), and sophomore Nate Gibbons added a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:18.98, with senior Thomas Murray placing fifth at 2:48.03.

Johnson Rees sprinted to a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.25), followed by freshmen Henry Keepes (24.31) and Boyer (24.33). Cox and sophomore Michael Ordonez delivered matching scores of 214.15 to tie for first in the one-meter, six-dive event.

Johnson Rees and Creegan took second and third in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 51.46 and 53.26, respectively. Miele and sophomore Luis Guillen Barcia followed with second- and third-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:11.61 and 2:24.55.

Reda earned his first collegiate win in the 200-yard breaststroke, stopping the clock at 2:21.99. Boyer added a runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:23.08, and Gibbons placed fourth in 5:30.09.

Hedstrom picked up his second win of the evening in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in 53.40, while freshman Matthew LeVesque placed fourth at 1:01.27. Cox then claimed the one-meter, five-dive event with a score of 156.05, and Ordonez earned third with a 123.90.

Hedstrom capped his standout night with a third event win, taking the 200-yard IM in 2:06.54. LeVesque added a fourth-place finish at 2:18.28.

Maine Maritime closed the meet with third- and fifth-place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay, posting times of 3:34.78 and 3:50.34.

The Mariners now turn their focus to the State of Maine Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championship, set for Dec. 5–6 at Colby College.
