Mariners Bounce Back with Buzzer-to-Buzzer Win in Regular-Season Home Finale

Curt Heinz recorded his third career triple-double in a 76-51 non-NAC win over UMFK

CASTINE--The Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team wrapped up its best regular season in 21 years on Sunday afternoon with a dominating non-conference victory, 76-51, over visiting UMaine-Fort Kent at Smith Gymnasium. The Mariners head into the postseason with a 13-10 overall record while the Bengals drop to 11-13.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior Curt Heinz put up game highs of 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists for his second triple-double this season.
  • Freshman Gabe Hagar had 14 points and five rebounds.
  • Junior Kaden Horner was a sparkplug off the bench to the tune of 13 points (4-5 FGs, 3-4 3FGs, 2-2 FTs) in 15 minutes.
  • Senior Markus Ramirez added 11 points.
  • Sophomore Jack Banks (8 points, 7 rebounds) led all players with three blocked shots.
UMFK Highlights
  • Aiden Grady led the Bengals with 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • Maksim Vukcevic scored 11 points, had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
How it Happened
  • Hagar converted a traditional three-point play to open the scoring and then nailed a 3ball to ignite a 10-0 run as the Mariners jump started to a 16-4 advantage with 13 minutes and 27 seconds left in the first half.
  • Maine Maritime, which never trailed, took a 39-29 halftime lead.
  • In the second half, Grady's jumper got the Bengals within eight points but MMA responded with 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 52-33 cushion at the 14:38 mark.
  • The Mariners shot 51.9 percent from the field (28-54) and held the Bengals to 28.4 percent (19-67).
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Heinz is the active career leader in NCAA Division III with 68 double-doubles, third overall in all Divisions and tied in Division III with two triple-doubles this season.
  • Maine Maritime last won 13 games in a season in 2003-04 (13-11).

  • Maine Maritime will be the No. 4 seed in the East Division of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament, and will play host Husson University in the quarterfinals on Friday.
